If it’s just for home use, any type of phone will do. But cordless phones for business are another matter. You must balance between the right price and getting the features you need.

Features of Cordless Phones

Most manufacturers today sell phones that can support two handsets with a single base. There are also 5.8-GHz analog phones and 1.9, 2.4 and 5.8-GHz digital phones. The former is cheaper but the latter has more features.

Also, most models come with a charging cradle. About a third of these devices are sold with an answering machine. In terms of cost, it’s usually cheaper to buy the phone with an answering machine rather than make a separate purchase.

Cordless phones for business usually need multiple handsets. Every handset will be on its own charging cradle minus any need for a phone jack. This allows you to set the handset where it’s needed. When you see a phone model you like in the store, check the website first. There may be updated features on the model not indicated in the package. If possible, download the manual. This allows you to see the exact features. It also lets you see how easy or hard the phone is to use. For cordless phones for business, ease of use is a priority.

The Battery Life

On the average, a fully charged cordless phone provides 8 hours of talk time. However some phones offer twice that talking time. Also look at how long the charge can be kept; most can hold for a week. The costs of batteries vary depending on the size. Since you’ll be using it often, this might be a factor too.

Try the Phone First

Whenever possible, try the phone at the store. Just hold it and see if it feels comfortable. Does it match your facial contours? The earpiece should have rounded corners. The center should be recessed so it’s a good fit for the ear.

Check the Layout and Controls

You can’t use cordless phones for business if the controls are too small. Make sure you can read and press them easily. You don’t want to waste your time fumbling with the buttons, so don’t overlook this aspect.

Two-Line Support

Some phones offer two-line support. This can be quite useful, so you’ll have a business and personal line. These models also come with different ringers, so you know if the call is business or personal. These phones allow for conferencing for 3 way connections. They also have ports to connect modems or faxes.

Speakerphone

A base speakerphone allows you to take in a call without the handset. The handset speakerphone lets you talk (with hands free) so long as you are within the speakerphone’s radius.

Using cordless phones for business requires more than just purchasing the latest phone in the market. The shape and ease of use must also be accounted for.
